The Cottage at Lucketts

by Tracey Barrett

In preparation to write this feature, I was excited to plan a day of lunch in Historic Leesburg, played with an idea of a flight of the latest wines at Tarara, and met up with a friend or two for a visit. This is just a part of the charm of a trip to The Cottage at Lucketts (42410 Stumptown Rd. Leesburg, VA 20176).  When emailed, the owner, Linda Campbell, immediately accepted my request to interview her, tour her shop, and take as many pictures as I needed to fulfill our article. Linda is a lovely, slender, tall woman, with sharply styled glasses. She is warm and inviting and clearly invested in her store.

Linda opened The Cottage doors in 2005, “unreal, I can’t believe it was 17-years ago” she shook her head. The Cottage began in downtown Historic Leesburg but moved out to the four-way light stop of the Village of Lucketts in 2017. She loved the idea of “destination shopping combined with winery trips”; exactly why I was looking so forward to this trip.

The Cottage is a 12 room farmhouse filled with wares of many different antique and vintage dealers. You can find farm tables, chairs, dressers, small coffee and end tables, headboards, antique mantles, and home decor throughout the interior rooms, wrap-around porch, outside the house, and in the little red barn outback. It boasts a family atmosphere not only among the employees and dealers but also with their customers and clients. Linda specified that it is not unusual to have her “regulars”, interior designers, make weekly visits for the perfect find for their latest interior design project.  September is busy with parents and newly accepted college students looking for chairs, desks, small kitchen tables, and headboards. Mark your calendar for the first full weekend in November when Linda and the staff transform The Cottage into a winter and holiday wonderland for the Holiday Open House.

As a “small shop” owner, Linda survived the Covid-19 shutdown in early 2020 and boomed after by adapting her business. She pivoted to private appointment shopping initially and is happy to be back to open 10 am to 5 pm every single day serving her customers. She is grateful to the American Express “Shop Small Saturday” campaign, and to all of the customers that support such a unique business that supports multiple vendors.

So if you’re close by you stop in and see what is new! The inventory turns over frequently. If it is a bit of a drive, make The Cottage part of your destination. Visit a winery (or two), as well as the other antique, vintage, and specialty shops in the Village of Lucketts.
