Masters Monday: Cindy Bennett “The Night of Terror, Suffragists at the Occoquan Workhouse”

Cindy Bennett will discuss the story and fate of 33 suffragists imprisoned at the Occoquan (Lorton) Workhouse in November 1917. The tenacity of these fearless women led to the 1920 passage of the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote.

A native of Ohio, Cindy earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Akron, and a M.A. in the same subject from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She and her husband, Andy, raised their two children in Fairfax County and consider it to be home. Until her recent retirement, Cindy served as the Executive Director of a trade association foundation in Alexandria. Currently she is the Treasurer of the Burke Historical Society (www.burkehistoricalsociety.org) and co-owner of Archery Academy in Fairfax Station.
