The scorching weather is about to abate, so now is the time to plan for a weekend of crisp fall weather where you can sleep under the stars. And, yes, there are some great options of doing so in Northern Virginia.

Camping option in Northern Virginia

By Lynn Norusis

Lake Fairfax
With 100 campsites to choose from, Lake Fairfax is a picturesque scene with modern-day amenities like plumbing: showers and toilets, potable water spigots, plus tables and grills. The park itself has great entertainment with the Water Mine, carousel, boating and a skate park. || Reston

Sky Meadows State Park
Sky Meadows State Park is a spot for those looking for a true nature experience with primitive hike-in tent camping at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Campers must hike one mile along Hadow Trail with their gear to get to these campsites. The campground is accessible by bike, but no vehicles are allowed near campsites. || Markham

Algonkian Regional Park
Surrounded by suburban neighborhoods, and adjacent to the Potomac River, sits over 800 acres of natural exploration and camping at Algonkian Regional Park. But, camping here isn’t pitching your tent; it’s shacking up in a cottage that range from 2-bedrooms up to 5-bedrooms. Enjoy the decks overlooking the river, or in some lodgings, enjoy a dip in the jacuzzi. || Sterling

Prince William Forest Park
A national park just south on Rt. 234, this park has options for all three camping options: tent, RV and cabin. There are over 100 cabins to pick from that are nestled throughout the over 1,600 acres, and there are loads of activities such as 37 miles of hiking trails, on- and off-road biking, ranger-lead activities and special events throughout the year. But back to camping, all options are on the table: three frontcountry campgrounds, one backcountry campground and five cabin camps, plus an RV-specific site. || Dumfries

Bull Run Regional Park
Known more for the annual events and Atlantis Waterpark, some may forget that Bull Run Regional Park is a 1,500-acre park that is a great spot for getting back in touch with nature. Depending on your needs there are campsites with electrical hook-ups, should you need it, or ones with none so you can really “rough it”. Rustic cabins are also available, and there is a camp store in case you forget the fixin’s for s’mores. || Centreville

Pohick Bay Regional Park
Waking up alongside the water is an option at Pohick Bay Regional Park. In Lorton, this 1,000 acre park offers a plethora of family entertainment options to include disc golf, mini golf, playgrounds, biking, canoeing, paddleboarding, standup paddleboarding, kayaking and boating. There is also Pirate’s Cove Waterpark. Camping has just as many options with tent sites, RV spots and cabins that include the rustic options and deluxe cabins. || Lorton
