Reston, surprisingly, is not done growing. While many think the uber-planned community that many planners look to for inspiration since the early 1960s is finished being built up, a look at new development coming online one would think it is just getting started.

We researched the major projects in the community last year—you can find that information here—we are now taking a look at some of the latest updates, but more importantly, what the county is doing to help you keep track.

Fairfax County recently launched the Reston Data Visualization project to help residents keep track of what is going on. This project not only includes actual development proposals and approvals, it also functions as a master interactive site to track urban parks and transportation projects.

Halley Rise

Halley Rise
Formerly Reston Crescent, Halley Rise will hold the area’s first Wegmans (expected 2022), self-driving cars–in partnership with Optimus Ride–and 4.1 million square feet of more development that will be a combination of eight blocks that will have offices, 1,500 housing units, a hotel, retail and acres of open space.
Updates: A dog park and an outdoor fitness park have been added to the list of amenities for this project, and they are expected to open this fall. The parks will be open to the public during daylight hours, and the dog park will have small and large dog sections totaling a combined 4,500-square-foot area. There will also be an 8,000-square-foot Apex Fitness Park to include Trekfit outdoor equipment such as a cargo net as well as push-up, pull-up and parallel bars.

Reston Station
Already built with retail and residential, developers of Reston Station, Comstock Companies, are working towards gaining more land for the project. Upcoming projects include Reston Row, what the developer plans to have “a main public plaza connecting four building sites. The shared space will be pedestrian focused with limited vehicular traffic. Surrounding the promenade will be residential and condominiums, hotel and office space as well as ground floor retail.” Plans also include a 200-room hotel and and additional 250,000 sq. ft. of office space.
Update: One of the two residential towers opened to residents earlier this spring at Faraday Park. When completed, the seven-story towers will have more than 400 residential units and a total of approximately 10,000 square feet of retail space. and will include amenities such as a maker’s workshop, a rooftop pool and sundeck, a fitness center, coworking spaces, dining room, commercial and baking kitchens, and a bike repair space. There will also be 13 4-story townhomes as part of the project.

Reston Gateway

Reston Gateway
Reston Gateway is being added to the already residential dense area of Reston Town Center. The development will be done in two phases, with the first already under construction. Once finished Reston Gateway is expected to be a 4.8 million square foot mixed-use community with high-rise offices, 2.010 residences, two hotels, shops and restaurants. Thirty percent of the project will be open space with 7.23 acres of parks and will also include some athletic fields. It will sit on 33 acres between the station and Reston Town Center and will be built in two phases.
Update: Construction is complete on the core of two office buildings (1950 and 2000 Opportunity Way) and tenants are being signed up. Two major businesses moving in are Volkswagen’s North American headquarters and Fannie Mae. Also, previously designated retail and parking space is now going to be offices—no change is proposed to the approved overall gross floor area.
